Students considering how to provide evidence of their teaching knowledge, dispositions, and performances through the portfolio should refer to the local, state, and national models and standards identified here as well as other appropriate sources, such as the standards in their content discipline.

Purdue School of Education

Refer to Purdue's Model of Professional Preparation. Also, use the three themes developed by Purdue's Portfolio Task Force to categorize artifacts you create for your portfolio:

  • Theme A - Attention to Learners
  • Theme B - Understanding Curriculum in Context
  • Theme C - Commitment ot Professional Growth

INTASC

The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) has developed principles which should be present in all teaching regardless of the subject or grade level taught. Indiana's standards are built upon the INTASC principles. Use these ten principles to categorize artifacts you create for your portfolio.

Indiana Professional Standards Board

The IPSB standards govern teacher licensure in the state of Indiana. There are standards for both developmental levels and content areas. When you create an artifact, in your narrative be sure to address how it relates to IPSB standards and demonstrates your knowledge of teaching and learning, your disposition to be a teacher, and your ability to actually teach (performance).

Indiana Academic Standards

The Indiana Academic Standards identify what school children should know at particular grade levels in specific content areas. When you create instructional materials, pay close attention to what the academic standards say. When you create an artifact, in your narrative or the information accompanying the artifact you should indicate how you have integrated the academic standards into your work.

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is the accrediting body for teacher education at Purdue University. NCATE has established standards for 17 specialty program areas. When you create an artifact, in your narrative address how the artifact shows your understanding of the relevant NCATE specialty program area standards.

More

In addition to demonstrating understanding of general teaching standards and standards relevant to your content area, your portfolio should also show evidence of your ability to understand and use technology. The ISTE/NETS standards address relevant technology standards. When you create an artifact, in your narrative you should make note of how the artifact and/or your electronic representation of it demonstrates your ability to meet the NETS standards.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an organization dedicated to maintaining high standards for teacher knowledge and performance. They support a volunatry national system that certifies teacher who meet these demanding standards. Some teacher exhibits are now available online (require QuickTime for viewing videos).
